Quizzy in her Modest Underbits!

QUIZZY!

As most of you know, Quizzy is the elf who makes picture and word puzzles and games.  Here's how Tizzy described her in Tizzy, the Christmas Shelf Elf:

Quizzy makes puzzles and games - quite a trick.
She turns them out cleverly. My, she is quick!

We Izzies have learned a little something about Quizzy from this sketch: she is EXTREMELY modest in her underbit selection.  IS THAT LONG UNDERWEAR??

Well, where we live (in the Izzy Elf Section of the North Pole) that is probably an excellent choice!

Maybe some other Izzies secretly wear long underwear, too!

Hmm, guess we'll have to wait for the rest of the sketches.

Love,

Santa's Izzy Elves

#4 Underbitted Izzy Elf!

H-e-e-e-re's Whizzy!

It always amuses us Izzies to see a picture of Whizzy in which he is holding still.  He is a rushing-around sort of elf, as you know.  It is alleged that he is the one who packed Tizzy in that bookshelf in the first place, because he was in too much of a hurry to check and make sure nothing was inside but books.

As Tizzy explains it:

There’s Whizzy, who rushes around, always scurries.
He probably packed me, in one of his flurries.

In the end (as you all know if you have read Tizzy, the Christmas Shelf Elf, not to mention Blizzy, the Worrywart Elf) Tizzy actually had quite a wonderful adventure and made two new friends, Owen and Alex.

So we guess that Whizzy's whipping around isn't so bad after all!

(BTW: We think that Deedy - Dorothea Jensen to you - has kind of a soft spot for Whizzy because her nickname as a much younger person was"Speedy Deedy"!)

Much love from the Izzy Elves.

ANOTHER IZZY IN UNDERBITS!!

You might recall that we posted a picture of Frizzy in her underbits that was the start of a new project. Well, now we have sketches of ALL of us Izzies in our underbits.  (These pix are all quite modest and proper, we hasten to add.)  To make Frizzy feel less embarrassed about being posted without her usual tunic on, Deedy (Dorothea Jensen to you) has decided to post the sketches of all the rest of us!

Here's the first one:  BIZZY

(The rest of us are all quite amazed that Bizzy wears striped undershorts. He doesn't seem like the type!)

Anyway, keep checking back to our blog for the sketches of the rest of us!

Love,

The (somewhat embarrassed) Izzy Elves

An Actual Television Interview! Woo hoo!

We Izzies are all very excited because our good friend, Deedy, (who is Dorothea Jensen to you) has done a short little television interview.

We've been playing it over and over here at the Izzy Section.  We especially enjoy hearing how she got the idea for writing about us elves in the first place.

Frizzy is very proud that her book, Frizzy, the S.A.D. Elf, is featured in this interview.  That's because her story won a Santa Choice Award.

We're all proud for her, of course.  Still, we were all delighted to hear Deedy mention all of our names, at least!

If you click on the following link, you can watch it, too.

Enjoy!

A New Project!!!! (Or Two)

Well, two, actually!

First of all, Our Illustrator, Shayne Hood, is doing sketches for a cool new product.

(Frizzy is a little embarrassed about being drawn in her underclothes, but she still likes the attention!)

We have all told her that we will soon be appearing in our underthings, too. That made her feel better.  A little anyway.

Secondly, Deedy (that's Dorothea Jensen to you) says she will be writing down our vacation adventures as soon as we get back to the North Pole.

And what a time we've had!

Deedy apologizes that she has not been able to help us write our posts lately because she has been too busy working to get her other book, A Buss from Lafayette, ready for release. (That will be about a year from now.) Her publisher, BQB Publishing, asked her to make a few changes, so she has been writing away on it, a big grin on her face!

We try not to scold her for wasting time writing about characters who do NOT have pointy ears.

We try.

But we fail.

Love,

The Izzy Elves

Deedy is Scouting for US!!!

As we told you before, we have been looking for a place where we Izzies can go on vacation and blend in.  We also told you that Deedy (that's Dorothea Jensen to you) wanted to come with us to escape the North Pole-like weather where she lives.

Well, she went one better than that: she already Went Warm, plus she looked around for a possible place for us to go.  Without her.

Look what she found:

We wondered if this meant that S.C. (or a statue of him) was in jail.

But she says that the railing is there just to keep S.C.'s statue safe from graffitti-ers.

We said she should tell whomever is in charge that there is little risk of defacement because even graffitti-ers don't want Santa mad at them.  They want full stockings on Christmas morning, too.

We think.

In any case, Deedy's suggestion is a good one.

So here is a close up of S.C. in all his glory!  We are all chuckling at the fact Santa is wearing sunglasses!

Santa says, however, that we all have to get 'em before we leave on vacation.

Now we are all hard at work getting our special safety seats ready before we take off for Someplace Warm!

Anyway, much love from the Very Excited Izzy Elves!

Izzy Elf Doll Testing Lab 2!

So Deedy put her West Coast Izzy Doll Testers to work testing Frizzy 2.0.

Frizzy 2.0 seems to be quite a hit!

The Lab Testing Personnel, young and old, agree that Frizzy 2.0 is not only huggable, but kissable!!

The testers also really LOVE the Frizzy Accessorites!

Needless, to say, we Izzies can hardly wait to try hugging and kissing the Frizzy doll ourselves.

And there is a rumor that there will soon be Tizzy, Blizzy, and Dizzy dolls.  Woo hoo!

Tuesday, February 17, 2015

Sorry, Deedy. We are NOT convinced!

So Deedy (that's Dorothea Jensen to you) REALLY wants to come on vacation with us Izzy Elves and S.C.

She keeps sending pix like this one showing how where she lives might as well be the North Pole.

We like Deedy, we do, but really, her snow is NOTHING compared to what we Izzies see everyday.

We can only say that Deedy should get back to us when the snow covers the doors and windows completely.

She says this will be happening soon.

I guess even honorary Izzy Elves have a harder time living with snow than we REAL Izzies!

Much love,

If We Don't Talk About This, We Might Pop With Excitement!

Ok, Ok.  We know we promised not to talk about our pageview stats because it is really boring for anybody except us Izzies.

However, we passed a HUGE milestone recently and have to brag at least a little bit.

But it is even more exciting to see where these pageviews came from!

The answer?

ALL OVER THE WORLD!!!

We don't know how accurate this is (for example we know for certain that some people in Canada and Australia have read our blog, and those places aren't showing up) but it is still VERY EXCITING to think about!

We also keep asking WHO ARE YOU PEOPLE AND WHY ARE YOU READING OUR BLOG????

If you have time, please send us a comment below and help us clear up this mystery!!!

Much love,

The (Extremely Curious) Izzy Elves

The Vote Has Been TAKEN!! We're GOING ON VACATION!!

So we all met in the Izzy Elf Board Room to discuss ideas for our upcoming vacation.  (Here's a glimpse of part of that room.)

At the end of a Very Long Presentation by Bizzy (everthing he says is ALWAYS very long) about possible destinations, we have made our choice.

It fulfills all our requirements:

1. It's someplace South.
2. It's someplace Warm.
3. It's someplace where we can all blend in to avoid being mobbed by over-enthusiastic children.

We are starting to get organized, and hope to leave soon! (First we have to make safety seats for all eight of us so no one falls out of Santa's sleigh on the way!)

Hooray!!!!

Much Love,

Bizzy, Blizzy, Dizzy, Fizzy, Frizzy, Quizzy, Tizzy & Quizzy

(Deedy, the honorary Izzy Elf, wants to come, too.  She says that so much snow has been falling where she lives, she might as well be living at the North Pole! Santa says "We'll see.")

Wednesday, January 28, 2015

Woo Hoo!! We Izzies (and S.C.) are Going On VACATION!

What's more, we're going SOUTH. That means WARM!

(Actually, anywhere we GO would be south. Since we are at the North Pole. Of course.)

Anyway, Bizzy has been searching the internet for a place we can visit where we would be able to BLEND IN.  (S.C. is worried that otherwise we might be mobbed by overly enthusiastic children.)

So Bizzy has found someplace that might just fill the bill.  S.C. is taking a look at Bizzy's data and then we will all meet in the conference room and vote on the plan.

SO THRILLING.

We do love our home, but you know, when the snow gets so deep that we Izzy Elves can't walk outside without it coming to our eyebrows (or higher, in Frizzy's case) we need a BREAK from winter.

And now we just might have one!

We'll keep you posted.

Love from the extremely excited Izzies:

ANSWERING THE BURNING QUESTION: WHERE DID WE IZZIES COME FROM???

So Bizzy was searching the internet and found something that Deedy (AKA Dorothea Jensen) wrote about how she started making books about us Izzy Elves.  Some of this we already knew, but a bunch of it is NEWS to us.

Please don't tell Deedy we found this: we think she doesn't want us to know all this "behind the scenes" stuff!

H-e-r-e's Deedy!

Copyright 2015 Red City Review
I answered a number of questions for the Red City Review which could not be included in this article because there wasn't room.

So I'm putting ALL my answers here.  Hope you don't find it TMI !

Q. What inspired you to write a book about elves? We've explored your website and are aware that Frizzy is the fourth book in your series.

A. When I was about four, my father, a family doctor, went on a home call very early on Christmas morning. When he came home, he decided to turn on the Christmas tree lights. In doing so, he knocked over the tree and the crash woke us all up. I thought that we had trapped Santa in our living room and was desperate to see him. My older brother, however, refused to let us go downstairs. I was very disappointed.

I think the germ of having Santa (or one of his elves) stranded in a family’s living room came from this experience. My first elf story, Tizzy, the Christmas Shelf Elf, is based on it. Then, when I had Tizzy tell the boys who found him about his elf colleagues, I started trying out various consonants with –izzy and found some amazingly apt names. They are: Blizzy, who makes snowglobes; Bizzy, who is the bossy, know-it-all elf; Fizzy and Dizzy, who make toys that surprise; Whizzy, who always rushes around; Frizzy, who styles the hair of Christmas dollies, and Quizzy, who makes puzzles and word games. Of course, the original –izzy name came from the fact that the stranded elf was, well, in a tizzy! His job is not revealed until the next book, however: Tizzy picks out books for Santa to bring to each child.

Once I named all eight elves, they started taking on little personalities and quirks, and before I knew it, I’d written three more stories: Blizzy, the Worrywart Elf; Dizzy, the Stowaway Elf (in which Santa does actually knock over a Christmas tree); and Frizzy, the S.A.D. Elf. Just for fun, I put my four grandsons into two of the stories, and made the Izzy Elf Section of the North Pole (and Santa) very savvy in 21st century technology.

I always loved “A Visit from St. Nicholas” and all the Dr. Seuss books, and so decided to write my elf stories in rhyming couplets.  I seem to have a knack for this, so once I figured out the plot for each book, the actual writing went very quickly. It’s great fun, actually.

Q. Do you have more Santa's Izzy Elves books in the works?

A. Yes, I will be writing stories featuring Bizzy, Fizzy, Whizzy and Quizzy

Also, I have two more grandsons now and have to figure out where they will fit into a story.

Q. What is your favorite thing about writing books for children?

A. Reading them aloud to kids and watching their faces as they follow the story! I especially like reading my elf books aloud to my grandsons who are just learning to read, and letting them figure out what the rhyming word is at the end of each couplet. They love doing that.

I also hugely enjoy watching my elves take shape on the page in illustrations. It’s kind of a circular endeavor: first I write about these characters, then I see their images and than I want to write about them some more. (This will all go one step further soon, as designs for Izzy Elf dolls are underway.)

Q. If you could tell parents the best reason for buying your books for their children, what would it be?

Unlike most picture books, these stories are actually aimed at older kids—aged 4 and up—and are not “dumbed down” for children. Instead, I wrote them so that, while they do greatly amuse kids, they also help them develop a taste for reading rhythmic verse, for playing with words, and for learning new ones. As one reviewer wrote about Frizzy:

I wish this future classic had been around when I was a child. I smiled the entire time I was reading it. The characters are lovable and easy to relate to. The rhyme format is fun and will lead to memory skills. There are a few words that may be just past the reading level, which is perfect. These will encourage children to not only learn new words - but to gain the skills to discover how to learn what new words mean.     Sylvia Cornelius, Bookdepository.com

Q. Frizzy goes against the norm and refuses to stick to gender stereotypes when it comes to the design of her toys. We believe this is an important lesson for kids, what made you want to include it in your book?

When I was a little girl, I used to wheel a toy six gun in my doll carriage instead of a doll (my main playmate was my older brother). My mother told me that this was quite unnerving for little old ladies who peeked into the carriage to see my cute little “dolly”. Later, when I was a young mother of two boys and a girl, I was distressed at how toys were so relentlessly gender-specific. Now that I am a grandmother (even though all six of my grandchildren are boys) I’m happy to see that there finally are toys out there that encourage girls’ interest in things mechanical.

I didn’t deliberately decide for Frizzy to design monster trucks that eventually appeal to girls, however. The idea just popped up in my brainalthough this probably happened because the experiences above are buried in there somewhere!

Elf Enterprises Testing Lab: Frizzy.1

THE TEST:

THE VERDICT:

1. AWESOME!!

2. WHEN WILL THERE BE A TIZZY DOLL??

That's the latest from the Elf Enterprises Testing Lab.

Love from the Izzies,

P.S. Dizzy says these kids look strangely familiar. He's going to take a look at the pix in his story, Dizzy, the Stowaway Elf to refresh his memory!

Celebrating With A Brown Hat, a Brick Wall and a Magazine on Her Birthday!

So Deedy (Dorothea Jensen to you) received a copy of the first ever Red City Review magazine and couldn't resist messing about wearing a brown hat in front of a brick wall like the young lady on the cover to show how excited she is about it!

Here's the front.

And here is Deedy showing off the article inside. Frizzy is even more thrilled about showing up in a real magazine than Deedy is (if such a thing is possible).

Here's a closeup of the article.
(Deedy says to remind everybody that this article is copyrighted by Red City Review. Whatever that means.)

Anyway, Deedy reports that she has now happily finished the first couple of hours of the first day of her 70th year!

Happy 69th birthday, Deedy, and much love from all the Izzy Elves!

Doesn't this lady ever stop???

Have we mentioned that Deedy (Dorothea Jensen to you) seems to be an obsessive list maker??
Well, she is. Below is her list of things to accomplish in 2015.
***
Plans for 2015
1. Get A KISS FROM LAFAYETTE published!
2. Win some awards for same????
3. Write, publish and record BIZZY, THE KNOW-IT-ALL ELF
4. Write  first PB&J book (no elves)
5. Finish A SCALP ON THE MOON (another historical novel for young readers, set in 17th century Massachusetts. Three chapters are written so far.)

6. Get as many of the Izzy Elf dolls in production as possible!!
Hmmm. Maybe I'll go back to bed. : )
***

Frankly, we Izzy Elves wish she would skip everything else and focus on #3.  After all, that's the REALLY interesting item on her projects list.  We think.

Oh well, I guess we'll just have to share Deedy's time with whatever those other things are.

But they CAN'T be as much fun as writing books about us!

Love,

Bizzy, Blizzy, Dizzy, Fizzy, Frizzy, Quizzy, Tizzy and Whizzy

Huggability Quotient Testing!

Here's Deedy checking out the "Huggability Quotient" of the "rough draft" of the Frizzy doll! We are all very excited (especially Frizzy) and can HARDLY WAIT to get our tiny hands on the finished product.

We are all so grateful to the other DD, Dee Dee Lozier, for bringing Frizzy off the page and into a hug!

Love,
The Izzy Elves

Deedy's 2014 List. All we can say is "Whew"!

We decided to share Deedy's List published on her Facebook page about everything (or almost everything) she did in 2014. We're a little bit afraid to ask her what she is planning to do in 2015!

3. Read an excerpt of the story to Friends of the Hopkinton Library.
4. Set up pages on my facebook account (you're looking at it) for all my various writing projects: Santa's Izzy Elves; The Riddle of Penncroft Farm, and A Kiss from Lafayette. This gives me a chance to post interesting pix and bits of information about the stories that are not in the actual books.
5. Found that a video of an interview I did for Riddle in 1990 has been posted online! Put links to it on my website, http://www.dorotheajensen.com/, and will soon put links here and on the Riddle page.
Can't believe how young I looked 25 years ago!

That's all I can think of for now. (I do have to laugh every time someone asks me if I'm retired. "No," I answer, "I'm just tired!")

***

So, as Deedy gears up for her 69th birthday next week, we wish her "Happy Birthday" and "Happy New Year" and hope she doesn't run out of steam before she finishes writing stories for Bizzy, Fizzy, Whizzy, and Quizzy!

Much love,

The Izzy Elves
