Christmas Eve Countdown: #2

You might have noticed that the first of our "advent" calendar poems we published yesterday was one day short of a regular advent calendar. That's because we Izzies are all about The Deadline, which for us is Christmas Eve. That is when we all stop working, help Santa load up the sleigh, and start celebrating.

This is not to say that we consider Christmas Day in any way unimportant!  No sirree! Christmas Day is what gives all of us our purpose in life.

Having said that, back to the Christmas Eve Countdown!  (Here's one about Blizzy!)

We are all quite amused to watch Blizzy the elf

Hang mistletoe bunches up all by herself.

And she's hung up so many that she cannot miss:

 We Izzies have decided to make a rhyming advent calendar to celebrate the season.

(You'd think we'd be too busy to fool around with this, but even elves have to take work breaks, you know!)

 Here's our first little effort:

‘Tis twelve days til Christmas and at the North Pole

We Izzies are working away, with one goal:

To make the right gifts for each child on the list.

(We want to make sure not a one has been missed.)

S.C. has examined each one of your letters

And scanned the web wishlists of online go-getters.

So our task is quite huge, and time’s wasting away.

We’d better get busy and fill Santa’s sleigh!

Tizzy is Happy Now!

  It suddenly occurred to us Izzy Elves, however, that some of you might think this book has something to do with the Elf on the Shelf stuff.

We hasten to assure you that it does not. Yes, there are some shelves involved. Tizzy story is about how he was packed away inside a bookcase by mistake (by Whizzy, as it turns out) and ended up stranded in the living room of two naughty little boys. (They have to figure out how to help him get home to the Pole by using the power of their own imaginations.)

However, we would like to assure you that Tizzy and the rest other of us Izzy Elves would never SPY on any children and rat them out to Santa Claus!

In fact, in the original version of Blizzy, the Worrywart Elf, Bizzy talks about this (and obviously disappoves of it):

I’ve heard that some other elves spy on bad kids
But that’s way too creepy—that Santa forbids!

In the interest of Full Disclosure, we must tell you that Deedy (that's Dorothea Jensen to you) wrote Tizzy's story down many years ago, she did, in fact, call it The Elf on the Shelf.  By the time it was published, however, she found that someone else had used that title.  To avoid confusion, she re-named it Tizzy, the Christmas Shelf Elf.

Therefore, a few people might be disappointed when they read this because nobody is a spy, but most are delighted!

Tizzy, The Christmas Shelf Elf is a lovely rhyming book begging to be read aloud in the tradition of the classic poem “A Visit From St. Nicholas”, more commonly known as “Twas The Night Before Christmas” penned by Clement Clarke Moore. In this version, “Twas the morning of Christmas and way before dawn…” and two brothers, Alex and Owen, tiptoe down the stairs to get a sneak peek at their presents. While they desperately are hoping for video games, they are disheartened to discover that they instead were gifted … books! *gasp*

They are even more surprised to discover a tiny elf, Tizzy – one of S.C.’s (i.e., Santa Claus) elves – who was accidentally packed into a present. Alex and Owen try a number of ways to return Tizzy to his home, but they soon discover that there is magic deep within the pages of books. The boys must hurry though, as they hear their parents coming down the stairs, and they are about to unknowingly place Tizzy in grave danger.

What I love the most about Tizzy, The Christmas Shelf Elf is that it is a true “read-aloud” story. While the book is indeed illustrated beautifully by Michelle Alfonso. I think children will be totally captivated by the story. There are some funny passages such as when the boys mistake Tizzy for a mouse and Tizzy gets chased by characters in the video game. The author also provides some tension to the story such as when the parents throw the packing fluff into the fire and the boys are afraid that this spells the end for Tizzy. All in all, this rhyming book is perfect for reading aloud to children of varying ages. . .

My Bottom Line:

Tizzy, The Christmas Shelf Elf is a clever read-aloud story featuring two excited siblings who sneak down early Christmas morning and discover a very special surprise. Only through their discovery of the magic of books do they find a way to send Tizzy back home. Kudos to the author for highlighting the importance of books! I recommend this book to be read aloud to children ages 5 and older.

So I hate to be a braggart, but take a look at this number:

This is the total - as of late today - number of "hits" on my Bublish account, that I began writing in late July. I have no idea who the people are who read my "Bubbles", or why they like to read them, but I would like to say "thanks" to all of you who have done so.

I have been having a wonderful time writing "background information" and "author insights" on Bublish for a couple of my Izzy Elf stories, as well as for my classic historical novel, The Riddle of Penncroft Farm. (I am SO looking forward to writing about my new historical novel for young readers, A Buss from Lafayette, which is coming out April 22, 2016.)

I really had no idea how to do this when I started Bublishing exactly four months ago.  I found, however, that it was terrific fun to revisit my stories, sometimes many years after writing them (30+ years, in the case of Riddle). I can't believe how easily I recall how I came up with ideas. Especially at my age.

In any case, I ended up simply writing stuff to entertain myself.

I am delighted that my Bubbling is apparently entertaining for others as well.

Bubbling Us Izzies

We Izzy Elves have been getting quite annoyed with Deedy (Dorothea Jensen to you) because she has focused all her attention lately on her Other Kind of Writing: historical fiction.  (Some new book called A Buss from Lafayette.)

Finally, we all signed a petition asking her to pay some attention to us. She pointed out that she has been paying SOME attention to us by creating Bubbles about our stories.

Hmmm.

"Just what are Bubbles?" we asked, not quite ready to forgive her.

She told us they were little insights she writes on a website called Bublish.com explaining why she wrote down what she did about some of our stories.  (Here's where you can see these Bubbles.)

Of course, at first, we all thought WE should be the ones writing these Bubbles, as it sounded like it might be fun.

She squashed that idea, unfortunately. So, once again, we have to rely on her to write down the truth about us Izzies and what we told her to write in our stories.

Tizzy and Blizzy, by the way, noticed that their stories are NOT on Bublish. 

Maybe we need to do another petition.

Take a gander at this lovely number! That's the number of times people have read one of my "author insights" (called "bubbles") since I started writing them on my Bublish.com author page in late July.

I've been having great fun re-visiting books I've written, both recent and not-so-recent, and reminiscing about how I came up with ideas for these stories.

In the case of The Riddle of Penncroft Farm, this means remembering bits from many years ago, as  I started writing that story in the early 80s!  I am amazed to find that when I read it now, I still recall why I put certain things into Riddle, and where many of my ideas originated. 

Sometimes, I make a Bubble that simply directs readers to other sites to see pictures of objects mentioned in the story (stake-and-rider fences, pudding caps, riddles, etc.), to watch a book trailer, or video blog, or to hear a song that is sung by a character in the book.

I have also been writing bits about two of my four Izzy Elf books, Dizzy, the Stowaway Elf, and Frizzy, the S.A.D. Elf. (FYI: a fifth is in the works, Bizzy, the Know-It-All Elf.) Of course, these are fantasy story poems, so it's harder to refer readers to places where they can see the imagined items mentioned in these stories, such as Virtual Reins, Elfascopes etc. However, I do direct readers to sites where they can watch book trailers, video blogs etc. 

 I guess anyone who wants to see these interesting elfin devices will just have to buy the Santa's Izzy Elves books. (Now there's a thought!)

As you might suspect from the devices cited above, the Izzy Elves (and Santa himself) are quite 21st century in the way they approach their age old tasks.

Deja Vu All Over Again: We Love It!

So one so-called "improvement" Deedy (that's Dorothea Jensen to you) has made recently is re-doing the "End Matter" in our books.  (We think the term sounds a little yucky, but she tells us this is the standard industry name for it.)

Anyway, we thought we'd post some of the E. M. for you all to see.  Here it is! (Of course, we know all about what happens in these stories, and such short summaries leave out the drama, the cliff-hanging, and the romance. We Izzies love to read 'em, anyway!)

1. Tizzy, the Christmas Shelf Elf 

Two naughty boys sneak downstairs Christmas morning before their parents are up and find Tizzy, one of Santa's elves, packed inside one of their presents.Tizzy says Santa's sleigh is powered by the imaginations of children, and asks the boys to use their own imaginations to send him home. But how? (Mom’s Choice Award Winner, Juvenile Level 1 [Ages 5-8 Years], e-book category)

2.  Blizzy, the Worrywart Elf

Blizzy (Tizzy's "favorite lass") is the only elf who notices that Tizzy is missing. When she starts asking her friends where he could be, however, they think she is just being a "worrywart". What Blizzy REALLY is, however, is very, very clever, and she alone just might figure out the mystery! (Mom’s Choice Award Winner, Juvenile Level 1 [Ages 5-8 Years], e-book category)

3. Dizzy, the Stowaway Elf

Dizzy (Tizzy’s best friend) eager to have an adventure of his own, sneaks aboard Santa’s sleigh. He literally drops into the bedroom of two little boys and the three of them share a wild joy ride that might be even more of an adventure than Dizzy was hoping for! 4. Frizzy, the S.A.D. Elf

Frizzy, the girl elf who styles the hair of Christmas dolls, misses them badly when Santa takes them away to deliver to children. She changes her job so she won’t miss the toys she works on. It doesn’t work out the way she planned! (Winner, Children/YA Category, Red City Review Book Awards; Winner, Santa Choice Award)

A Bit Worried about What Deedy Has Done Now.

Deedy (that's Dorothea Jensen to you) says she has been Fixing Up our stories recently.  We tried to pin her down as to what EXACTLY she is doing, but she wouldn't tell us much.


Tizzy did peek at his story online, and thinks that there might be a few lines missing. Blizzy says there is a small hole in hers, too.


They asked Deedy about this, and she said not to worry because she has just made Tizzy, the Christmas Shelf Elf and Blizzy, the Worrywart Elf  BETTER. Hmmm. We are reserving judgement. We Izzy Elves are very proud of these stories and really hope Deedy hasn't messed them up.










Unfortunately, there is not much we can do about this situation. Except maybe whine a little.

Deedy really HATES that! (We consider whining our most Powerful Weapon.)

Tizzy on Kindle Select

 Deedy (that's Dorothea Jensen to you) told me she just signed my book up to be on Kindle Select.  I have no idea what that means.  I hope she knows what she's doing!

She said that as part of this Mysterious Deal, the Kindle edition of Tizzy, the Christmas Shelf Elf  will be GIVEN AWAY FOR FREE for five days around Thanksgiving.

I don't get it.

The other Izzies keep asking me if this means my story isn't worth anything.  A couple have been pretty sniffy about it.

I won't say who.

Deedy tells me not to worry.  My story is priceless. 

She says it just means more people will find out about it. But I have my doubts.

I was thinking the other day about the fact that my first historical novel for kids (The Riddle of Penncroft Farm) was set in the 20th Century and the 18th Century.  My second historical novel for kids (A Buss from Lafayette) is set in the 19th century with lots of information about the 18th.  My third historical novel for kids (A Scalp on the Moon, which I'm working on now) is set in the 17th century.

I said to my husband, "Wow! That means I will have written  about four different centuries: the 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th!"

He looked at me.

"Deedy, " he said. "Your Izzies are 21st century elves."

He's right.

I guess that makes me a Five Century Writer!

I am so delighted to announce that Deedy (that's Dorothea Jensen to you) has FINALLY made a trailer just for my own story, Tizzy, the Christmas Shelf Elf!  Take a look!

PLEASE DON'T TELL THE TABLOIDS!

Ok, ok, we know that we have posted only six of us eight Izzy Elves in underbits.  Today we will remedy that omission.  Here are the final two, Tizzy and Blizzy.

 They don't actually know that we are posting this today.  We think they are a little bit embarrassed that they are both looking so googoo-eyed.  Frankly, we're all a little embarrassed that they are looking so googoo-eyed. But what can we do?  They always look like this these days.

Ever since Deedy (that's Dorothea Jensen to you) wrote down their stories (Tizzy, the Christmas Shelf Elf and Blizzy, the Worrywart Elf) they are no longer shy or discreet about showing how much they like each other. Or whatever.

The rest of us (that is Bizzy, Frizzy, Fizzy, Dizzy, Whizzy, and Quizzy, who are posting this) think it all happened when each read the story about the other.

After all, here is what appears in  Tizzy, the Christmas Shelf Elf, when Tizzy is telling two naughty boys who sneaked downstairs before their parents were up about all the Izzy Elves:

While Blizzy’s the last (she’s my favorite lass)
She fashions the snowflakes that swirl under glass.

And as for Blizzy's story, well the WHOLE THING shows how fond she is of Tizzy, but especially this part:

Then Blizzy smiled happily all to herself
And wondered when she’d see her favorite elf.
This is the year, she thought, when Tizzy might
Take hold of her hand when they danced in the night.
And maybe—that’s maybe—he’d give her a kiss
Beneath the green mistletoe. That would be bliss!
Just thinking of this made her blush like a rose
As she threw back her covers and threw on her clothes.

So we guess that all this "googoo eyes" business is Deedy's fault.  After all, she's the one who wrote these "tell-all" stories.

We just hope the tabloids don't get hold of these revealing pictures.

NO FAIR! Deedy didn't show OUR cups (which are way cooler)

Deedy (that's Dorothea Jensen to you) just posted her first video blog. While we always enjoy seeing her online (she doesn't get up here to the Izzy Elf Section of the North Pole very often in person), we must confess we are a little disappointed in what she decided to feature in this video blog.

If you look very, very carefully, you can see that on the shelf behind her are OUR cups, or at least those for Tizzy, Blizzy, Dizzy, and Frizzy. We really love those cups. But what did Deedy show???

As you know, we Izzy Elves are not Whiners as a rule, but we would like to go on record as saying that Deedy needs to show everybody OUR cups.

They hold coffee just as well as the one with that red-headed girl and Lafayette on it.

We FINALLY Got Deedy's Attention! (It's about time.)

Deedy (that's Dorothea Jensen to you) has been neglecting us Izzy Elves shamefully for a long, LONG time.  She has been so involved with her Other Kind of Writing (A Buss from Lafayette, which is historical fiction for kids, whatever THAT is) she has pretty much ignored us completely!

We pointed out to her that she has not helped us post anything on our Elfblog for almost TWO MONTHS!!

She apologized for all this and said she would do better.  We'll see.

Anyway, we read through our blog posts and realized that we have not quite posted all of the Izzy Elves in Underbits Pix. (You might recall that these are sketches by Shayne Hood for a new project she and Deedy - and Dee Dee, actually - are doing.)

As some of you know, Dizzy specializes in toys that surprise. Recently, however, he has SUPER-specialized in electronic toys.  (He's become very savvy in this type of thing.)

Those of you who have read his story, Dizzy, the Stowaway Elf, know that because of this skill he solved a big problem for Santa, which probably helped S.C. forgive him for stowing away on his sleigh on Christmas Eve. (Although Dizzy himself admits that a boy named Stuart figured out how to make the Virtual Reins work.)


In any case, we are happy that Deedy has finally seen fit to help us out on our blog.
